Time needed: 15-30 minutes for video creation, plus time to present in class
Objectives:
- To learn and study vocabulary in context
- To motivate students with the use of videos
- To encourage student creativity in digital story-telling
Procedures:
- Divide class into groups of 2-3 students, depending on the size of the class and number of vocabulary words.
- Give each group a vocabulary word or idiom on a slip of paper. They must create a 6 to 10 second video that illustrates their assigned vocabulary word. The video must be short to force students to be concise and clear about the definition of their word. Videos should be recorded somewhere outside the classroom. Set a time for students to return to class to present their videos.
- As students return, give them a few minutes to finalize and edit, though this should not take long.
- Students email videos to the teacher to present to the class. Review videos as a class, discussing the definitions and illustrations that students created for each word.
- Alternatively, students could rotate groups, showing each other their videos and teaching the vocabulary to each other.
Materials:
- Smartphones or tablets with video recording app such as Videolicious
- Selected vocabulary list (one word per group); write each word on a separate slip of paper
- Classroom computer with internet connection and projection capability
Evaluation:
Be sure students understand the time constraint for the video and that they will not be able to do much editing. If presentation time runs short, continue in the next class session or upload videos to a class blog or website for students to view later.
